Against Military AI Reading Group — Deepfakes in warfare
On May 3, 2024, I presented a reading recap on deepfakes in warfare at the Against Military AI Reading Group at Mila.
We discussed voice cloning, synthetic images, and manipulated video through examples from Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine. The session explored how fabricated media can spread misinformation and also make people doubt authentic reporting, asking what fact-checking can and cannot address.
The readings included a study of trust and deepfakes during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reporting on voice cloning in Sudan, and reporting on AI-generated misinformation around the Gaza war.
